Looking for a great way to exercise and have fun with friends while avoiding harmful sunrays and uneven tan lines? Badminton is the sport for you! It is a fun alternative to gym routines that can get monotonous, while giving you an equally effective workout. Badminton is a highly exciting racket sport that is largely played indoors with friends. The sport involves using a racket to hit the shuttlecock or birdie to score points against your opponent(s) using a variety of strategies. While many are aware of these perks that are derived from playing badminton, here are three compelling reasons to play badminton you never knew.

1. Weight Loss

Shred them fats in no time!

Playing Badminton is an amazing way to lose weight! This is because it involves compound movements such as jumping, swinging, smashing and lunging: great for building muscle tone. A simple game can tone your forearms, calves, butt, quads and triceps and many more muscle groups.

Playing Badminton is a form of High-Intensity-Interval-Training or HIIT for short, a popular and effective way to burn fat. The game is designed in an unpredictable manner that involves varying intervals of fast-paced action that is guaranteed to give your body the workout of a lifetime.

Don’t take my word for it! Science has shown that an hour of social badminton burns about 250 calories, whereas competitive badminton burns about twice as much, higher than jogging on the spot for an hour! Coupled with the fact that HIIT promotes fat burn, you’ll be getting muscle definition in places you didn’t know you could, in no time!

2. Cardiovascular Benefits

Playing Badminton is also great for improving cardiovascular endurance! Researchers have found that HIIT positively affect athletes’ stamina. In a study held by Japanese physicians, a group of participants that followed a much shorter HIIT program achieved bigger gains in endurance than a long program of steady cycling.

Best workouts are often a blend of both short HIIT trainings and long, steady cardio trainings. Why not just add a game or two of Badminton in to your weekly workout mix? Running from baseline to baseline swinging your heart out may just pay off after all!

3. Health Benefits

However, perhaps one of the most compelling reasons is number three. Playing badminton brings awesome health benefits. From lowering cholesterol to preventing Osteoporosis, the physical exertion from playing badminton can help you build strong bones and maintain heart health. Such diseases are disabling and potentially fatal. Playing badminton can literally save your life! So if you’re already playing badminton, great! If not, start playing badminton!

4. Make Friends

Besides physical benefits, the number four reason to play badminton is because it is a great way to make friends. Badminton is a sport that cannot be played alone, much like football. Perhaps now’s a good time to ask that friend you haven’t seen in a long time for a smashing good time, or you could also ask a group of friends and have a badminton party!

5. It's Easy!

Five, my favourite reason, badminton is easy and convenient! Ever had a plan called off due to bad weather? Terrible feeling! Badminton is largely an indoor activity. It can be played by all ages, the only requirement is being able to swing a racket; some people even play sitting! All you need is a pair of indoor court shoes (Badminton shoes would be great, but any shoes would do, really), racquets and shuttlecocks. These items can be found at rather cheap prices here in Singapore. For example, a pair of reasonably good Yonex badminton shoes ca n cost just a little less than $60, and rackets can be bought at just $19. Courts in Singapore are cheap as well, Badminton courts readily available in the heartlands $7.50 at peak periods and only 3.50 during non-peak periods.
